Region locks are the number one problem with codes
Most digital codes are made for a specific region. A code for the wrong region won’t work on your account and can’t be resold.
- Know your account’s region. Steam, PlayStation and Xbox accounts have a registered country; the code has to match that country.
- Where do you enter the code? Steam codes are only entered under Steam > Games > Activate a Product on Steam. A code entered on the wrong screen gives an “invalid” error even if the code itself is fine.
- Age restrictions. On PlayStation and Xbox, age-restricted content won’t activate if the account’s age doesn’t qualify.
After you get the code
- Try it right away. Use the code as soon as it’s delivered. If there’s a problem with an unused code, it’s easy to sort out; with a problem reported days later, it’s hard to prove who used the code.
- Typos. Some “invalid code” errors are just typing mistakes; use copy and paste.
- Take a screenshot. Save the error message as a screenshot; in a dispute it’s the strongest evidence.
Frequently asked questions
My code says “invalid”. Is it broken?
Not always. There are three common causes: the wrong region, the code entered on the wrong screen, and a typo when typing it by hand. Steam codes are only entered on the Activate a Product screen.
How do I find my account’s region?
In the country/region field of the platform’s account settings. Check this before you buy the code; a code for the wrong region can’t be refunded.
When should I use the code?
As soon as you receive it. A problem with an unused code is solved quickly; with a code you’ve held on to, it’s harder to show where the problem came from.
How long does code delivery take?
Delivery is digital; the timing and what to do if there’s a delay are set out in the delivery terms.
