What to settle before you order
Almost all disputes in design work come from four things that weren’t discussed at the start:
- Number of revisions. How many revisions are included in the price? A promise of unlimited revisions is usually unrealistic; ask for a clear number.
- Delivery format. Only PNG, or the source file too (PSD, AI, .aep)? Without the source file you can’t update the design yourself later.
- Usage rights. Can you use the design on stream, on social media and in commercial work? Put the scope in writing before you order.
- Font and image licenses. Are the licenses for the fonts and stock images used passed on to you, or do they only apply to the designer?
Keeping the process on track
- Give references. Two or three examples you like are more effective than ten paragraphs of description.
- State the sizes from the start. Stream overlays, banners, emotes and profile images all have different sizes; a size added later means new work.
- Ask for drafts. On longer jobs, seeing the work at draft stage is better than starting over at the end.
- Keep the conversation on the site. In a dispute, only on-site messages can be taken into account as a record.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get the source file too?
Not necessarily, unless the listing says so. If you want to update the design yourself later, make sure the source file is included before you order.
How many revisions do I get?
As many as the listing states. If it doesn’t say, ask before you order; the number of revisions is the most common cause of disputes in design work.
Can I use the design commercially?
The scope of usage rights depends on the listing. Stream use, social media and commercial use should each be discussed separately.
What if I don’t like the work?
First use the revisions defined in the listing. If the work delivered is different from what the listing describes, report it before you confirm delivery.
