What you need to know about Graphics Cards and PC Parts
What to test on a used graphics card
It’s hard to tell a used card’s history from the outside; testing it is more reliable than guessing.
- Identity and readings with GPU-Z. This shows whether the card really is the model in the listing and whether values like temperature and clock speed stay stable.
- Load test. Run the card under load with a test such as FurMark, Heaven or 3DMark; there should be no artifacts on screen, sudden shutdowns or overheating.
- Real game test. After the synthetic test, try it in a game or two; some problems only show up in games.
- Mining history. Cards that were used for mining for a long time can be worn even if they look fine from the outside. A card whose temperature and voltage were looked after can run for years without problems, but with cards used for mining for a very long time the risk rises noticeably. Ask the seller openly about the card’s history.
Warranty and how you buy
- Ask for the serial number. If there’s a box, you can check the warranty status on the manufacturer’s website with the serial number on it.
- Even a short warranty is valuable. A card with a few months of warranty left protects you if a problem shows up while you test it after buying.
- Test it if you collect in person. If collecting in person is an option, fitting and testing the card before you take it is much more practical than returning a card that arrived by courier.
- Is your power supply enough? Check the card’s recommended power supply rating and the power connectors it needs before you order.
Shipping, right of withdrawal and checking your delivery
- Who pays for shipping? It’s stated on the listing page; check before you order.
- Damaged package. If the box is crushed, torn or shows signs of having been opened, have the courier record a damage report on the spot. A damage claim without a report is much harder to pursue.
- Film the unboxing. Opening the package on one continuous video is the strongest evidence you have if the item is incomplete or damaged.
- Right of withdrawal. This is a physical product category, and the 14-day right of withdrawal applies from the moment the item reaches you. Custom-made items are excluded from this right; the full terms are set out in the purchase agreement.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to buy a graphics card that was used for mining?
Cards whose temperature and voltage were looked after can keep running for a long time after mining. What decides the risk is how long and under what conditions it was used; ask the seller about the card’s history and always test it under load.
How do I test a graphics card?
Check the model and readings with GPU-Z, run a load test such as FurMark or 3DMark, then try it in a game or two. There should be no artifacts on screen, sudden shutdowns or overheating.
How can I tell whether it still has a warranty?
If there’s a box, you can look it up on the manufacturer’s website with the serial number on it.
Is my power supply enough?
Check the card’s recommended power supply rating and the power connectors it needs before you order; an insufficient power supply causes sudden shutdowns in games.
